4/18/2023 0 Comments Crazy stupid love screenitNoah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig perfectly capture the feeling of chasing something without ever really knowing what it is, be it happiness, a career, or a relationship. – Miranda “Freddie” Fredholm Other honourable mentions: A Separation, Crazy Stupid Love, Shame, The Cabin in the Woods, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Skin I Live InĢ012 Frances Ha Frances Ha (2012, IFC Films) We Need to Talk About Kevin movie filled with anxiety that leaves you biting your nails. Lynne Ramsay tells this tragic story with on-point direction, a variety of visual metaphors and a nonlinear narrative that serves the viewer well until the shocking gruesome finale. We Need to Talk About Kevin We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011, Oscilloscope Laboratories)Ī traumatic family experience, in the eyes of the mother played by Tilda Swinton who regrets giving birth to her problem-child, the titular character Kevin who creates mischief (to put it lightly). Whilst a simple narrative, all of the performances are excellently subdued, Refn often allowing music to say more than dialogue ever could. At times heavy-handed (see Ryan Gosling getting emotional over his neighbour’s husband returning as Desire‘s Under Your Spell throbs in the background), both the soundtrack and score serve to add emotion. Many a drunken night has ended with me crying over the beauty of the elevator and A Real Hero scenes at 2am and for good reason. – Deren Elif Akın Other honourable mentions: Inception, Shutter IslandĪ film that could have easily become yet another chase sequence filled action film *cough*fast and the furious*cough* Drive is surprisingly tender. Darren Aronofsky creates undoubtedly one of the best films of the decade in this story of a ballerina’s descent into be-feathered madness. It is a film that wraps itself around your brain and leaves you speechless as the plot unfolds in front of you. The slow emergence of Nina’s dark side as she pushes herself to the edge of sanity to perfect the role is disturbing yet seductive in a way that draws you in. The film’s fragile protagonist Nina ( Natalie Portman) is a ballerina awarded the duel roles of the white and black swan but is tested to her limits when a new rival, who seems more ideally suited to the black swan role, arrives. – Sabastian Astleyīlack Swan Black Swan (2010, Fox Searchlight Pictures)Īlmost a decade has passed since Darren Aronofsky’s wild psychological thriller Black Swan was first released. Scott Pilgrim is the film that keeps on giving, and you’ll always find something new in every re-watch. To me, it’s a masterpiece of production all the easter eggs, small cues and foreshadowing for what’s to come, not to mention the level of practical effects? Not to mention the soundtrack, both the score and the soundtrack are timeless in how amazing they are. I’ve seen it at least 10 times now – I even used to fall asleep listening to the multiple commentaries on the DVD. Scott Pilgrim vs The World is what began my obsession with film. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010, Universal Pictures) With stunning direction from David Fincher, and perhaps the best-composed score of all time from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, The Social Network still holds up a decade later as one of the best films of the 2010’s. Eisenberg and Garfield deliver career-defining performances that still, ten years later, bring me to tears as they portray two best friends falling out of love with each other. While the film presents itself as a biopic concerning scorned nerd-turned-billionaire Mark Zuckerberg ( Jesse Eisenberg), at the heart of this story is the friendship between him and his best friend Eduardo ( Andrew Garfield). I don’t care what anyone says, The Social Network is a romantic-dramedy. So without further ado… 2010 The Social Network The Social Network (2010, Sony Pictures Releasing) Our collectively decided cream of the cinema crop. To celebrate the ending of 2019, as well as an entire decade, Obscur’s writers have joined together to discuss their favourite films of the previous one.
